Brown standing seam porch roof and a new gutter along a stone front

Gutters in Richmond, KY

Continuous gutter rolled to length on site, downspouts, and gutter guards sized to what your roof actually sheds.

Water only causes real damage once it has somewhere bad to go, and that is usually the point where a gutter is undersized, pitched wrong, or has pulled loose from the fascia. The job starts with measuring the roof area and pitch and checking the fascia board itself, since gutters are only as good as what they are hung on. Old gutters come off, and new continuous gutter gets rolled to length right on site, so there are no seams running the length of a wall.

Sectional gutters leak at every joint eventually, that is just how they are built. Undersized gutters overflow in a hard Central Kentucky downpour and dump water straight against the foundation, which is a bigger problem here since our clay soil already drains slowly and holds water against the house longer than sandy soil would. In winter, clogged downspouts can back water up and contribute to ice damming at the eaves.

Sizing depends on the roof area and pitch, a 5 inch gutter is fine for a lot of homes but a steep roof or large roof plane often needs 6 inch capacity and more downspouts. Gutter guards cut down on debris from overhanging trees but do not remove the need to check the system occasionally, especially after a big storm.

The process

How gutters work runs.

  1. 01

    Measure roof and fascia

We measure the roof area, pitch, and check the fascia board condition before choosing gutter size.

  2. 02

    Remove old gutter system

Old sectional or damaged gutter comes down, along with any bad fasteners or rotted fascia.

  3. 03

    Roll continuous gutter on site

Gutter stock gets rolled to the exact length needed, so there are no seams along the run.

  4. 04

    Hang gutter and set pitch

Gutter is hung with a slight pitch toward the downspouts so water actually moves instead of sitting.

  5. 05

    Install downspouts and guards

Downspouts are placed to carry water away from the foundation, and guards go on if you want them.

  6. 06

    Test flow and clean up

We run water through the system to check the pitch and outlets before leaving the site clean.

FAQ

Gutters questions.

Why continuous gutter instead of sectional?

Continuous gutter has no seams along the run, which means fewer places for it to leak over time. Sectional gutter is joined every few feet, and those joints are usually the first thing to fail.

What size gutter do I actually need?

It depends on the roof area, the pitch, and how many downspouts the run has. A steep roof or a large roof plane sheds more water in a short time and needs more capacity than a standard 5 inch gutter can handle.

Do gutter guards stop the need to ever check my gutters?

They cut down on leaves and debris getting in, which helps a lot under trees, but they are not a reason to never look at the system again. Heavy storms can still push debris onto the guards themselves.

My gutters overflow every time it rains hard, what is wrong?

Usually it is one of three things, the gutter is undersized for the roof, it is pitched wrong so water sits instead of draining, or the downspouts are clogged or there are not enough of them. We check all three before recommending a fix.
